Shiraz University to inaugurate transonic wind tunnel

A wind tunnel, which is unique in the Middle East, will be inaugurated in Shiraz University this year, Dr. Abbas Ebrahimi, the secretary of the headquarters for developing aerospace technology stated.

All the research activities, which required such technology, had been implemented using simulators, he added.

Wind tunnels fall within different categories, he said, adding that they are divided into subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and ultrasonic types, each of which has advantages and disadvantages and is suitable for special purposes.

According to Ebrahimi, Shiraz University’s transonic win tunnel has been established by the Faculty of Mechanics in cooperation with the headquarters for developing aerospace technology.

The headquarters is scheduled to inaugurate 12 aerospace achievements by the end of the year, he said, adding that investments during the past three years have led to 12 achievements in the fields of boosting laboratorial infrastructures and aerospace products. Some of the achievements have been so far unveiled, he noted.

A wind tunnel is a tool used in aerodynamic research to study the effects of air moving past solid objects. A wind tunnel consists of a closed tubular passage with the object under test mounted in the middle. Full-scale aircraft or vehicles are sometimes tested in large wind tunnels.
